Steamer 'President' on the Mississippi River
Additional Details:
This real photo card shows the President docked and loading passengers. Built in 1924 as the steam packetboat Cincinatti, in 1933 she was converted into the largest excursion boat in America. Designated a National Historic Landmark on December 20, 1989, she was the last remaining large Western Rivers sidewheel excursion boat. Purchased in 2005 by Effingham, Illinois businessman David Campbell, the ship was moved from Alton to St. Elmo, Illinois. As of 2009, he still intends to turn it into a hotel, but for now the President sits as a rusting hulk. A European film crew spent eight months documenting the move to St. Elmo. A producer called it 'one of the biggest undertakings in U.S. history' and will be featured later this year as a cable documentary |
