The Corn Dance at Santo Domingo takes place August 4th each year, and is a thanksgiving ceremonial. The performance, preceded by three days of sacred rites, lasts from early morning until late at night, and consists of a series of dances in the plaza by two alternating groups of about 100 men, women, and children, all gaily and picturesquely attired in native costume. In addition to the dancers in each group there are about 50 musicians or singers. Of great interest are the antics of several fantastically dressed men who are termed clowns
