When you go down Bright Angel Trail you will gain an abiding sense of the real proportions of the canyon. For the first two miles the descent is a sort of a Jacob's Ladder, zigzagging at an unrelenting pitch. At the end of two miles a comparatively gentle slope is reached. Looking back from the plateau the huge towers that border the rim shrink to pigmies, yet less than one-half the descent has been made.
