Death Valley, California, is over 200 feet below
sea level. In summer the thermometer registers
140 degrees in the shade. It is at once the low-
est and hottest place on earth. It received its
name in 1850 through the destruction of a party
of emigrants, who were attempting to cross its
arid waters. It is chiefly noted for its large de-
posits of crude borax.
