The summits of the San Francisco Peaks are
elevated nearly 13,000 feet above the sea, yet
only 6,000 feet above Flagstaff, on the Santa
Fe. The apex of Humphrey's Peak is a little
more than ten miles from the town. The out-
look from this peak is one of the noblest of
mountain views, commanding 75,000 square
miles , the main features of which are as follows:
directly north, the Grand Canyon, 50 miles
away; and topping that, the Buckskin Moun-
tains, 40 miles farther distant; to the right,
the Navajo Mountains near the Colorado State
line, 200 miles; in the northeast, the Painted
Desert; to the south, the Superstition Moun-
tains near Phoenix, 160 miles distant; in the
southwest, the Bradshaw Mountains, 140 miles.
