MEMORIAL ARCH ON THE INNER QUADRANGLE, Stanford University with Hoover Tower in the back- ground. This academic center of the University is constructed of native sandstone in a classic Ro- manesque style typical of Mediterranean civiliza- tions. Stonecutters from Italy carved the intricate patterns on arches and column capitals.
