Back:
ALABAMA'S STATE CAPITOL in Montgomery
has been the seat of the state government for
over one hundred years. In the present House
of Representatives chamber, the Ordinance
of Secession was passed in 1860, and the cap-
itol became the official home of the Confeder-
ate government until it was later moved to
Richmond. The central section has an enor-
mous 97-foot dome, and on each side of the
main entrance a spiral cantilever stairway
winds to the third floor.
