Additional Details:
Thomas Jefferson designed these winding walls, one brick thick, after "ribbon walls" he saw in an English garden when he was Ambassador to France. In his ground plan for the University of Virginia Jefferson laid them out to separate gardens behind the homes of faculty members. This view shows the "long walk" leading to the Rotunda.
