SERPENTINE WALLS, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.
Thomas Jefferson designed these winding walls, one
brick thick, after "ribbon walls" he saw in an Eng-
lish garden when he was Ambassador to France. In
his ground plan for the University of Virginia Jeffer-
son laid them out to separate gardens behind the
homes of faculty members. This view shows the
"long walk" leading to the Rotunda.
