The wonderful Canyon de Chelley (pronounced,
de Shāyē) is in the heart of the Navaho country;
a deep, broad fissure in the table-land, walled on
both sides with red sandstone. The walls vary in
height 20 feet to 800 feet. Within a distance of some
twenty miles, which is nearly the length of the
canyon, there are about 150 cliff-dwelling ruins,
some of which are of very large villages. The
canyon is a marvel of scenic beauty and grandeur.
