Statue of Nathan Hale, New York City.-On October 22.
1776, Capt. Nathan Hale of Connecticut was hanged as
a spy near East Broadway and Market Street. From the
purest patriotic motives he had volunteered to go inside
the British lines, and was arrested on his return and
taken to General Howe's headquarters. No trial was
granted him, and the Provost Marshal even destroyed the
letters he had written to his mother and sisters.
