Laguna (the lake) was founded in 1699 and is
the youngest of the New Mexico pueblos. It is
66 miles west of Albuquerque and is perched upon
a sterile hill, in a compact cluster a fortress built
with every eye alert to its defensive qualities.
For while the Pueblo Indians tilled the soil and
provided for their needs, their neighbors were
nomadic and warlike.
