91. TOTEM POLE AND PIONEER SQUARE,
SEATTLE, WASH.-Seattle was located in 1851
and named after an Indian chief. The city is
one of the largest and most enterprising ones
in the northwest, being the harbor for steamers
to and from the Orient. One of the curious
features erected in Pioneer Square is a Totem
Pole, which is an ancient superstition symbolized
in these poles, carved in wood and often in their
character suggesting the Monoliths of Central
America. Ti e workmanship is clear and skill-
ful. displayig an ingenuity uncommon among
semi-civilized tribes.
