For many years previous to 1872 both the Eastern
and Western hands of Apaches gave erdless
troubles to the United States authorities. By force
of arms and treaties in that year they were settled
on reservation in New Mexico and Arizona. In
1887 the Jicarilla in Northwestern New Mexico;
in 1883 the Mescalero in central New Mexico, be-
tween 1871 and 1877 the Western Bands upon
the White Mountain and San Carlos reservations
in Arizona.
