During the Revolutionary War, the hall was used
as barracks, hospital, and horse stable for Amer-
ican and French troops. It was designated a
National Shrine in 1963. The Van Wickle Gates
are opened only twice each academic year; in
September during convocation ceremonies, and
in June at the commencement procession.
