CAMPUS SCENE: HOUSTON HALL (left) AND
VAIL MEMORIAL LIBRARY. Houston Hall, erected
in 1881, a gift of H. H. Houston of Philadelphia,
formerly contained facilities for a small chapel,
library, classrooms, offices, and student housing.
It now serves exclusively as a dormitory.
Vail Memorial Library, erected in 1898, was a
gift of Dr. William H. Vail of New Jersey. The
capacity was doubled when an extension was
added in 1953. A special feature of the Univer-
sity's library collection is the Irvin W. Underhill
Collection of African Art objects, one of the
finest in the United States.
