Campus Scene: Houston Hall (left) and Vail Memorial Library. Houston Hall, erected in 1881, a gift of H. H. Houston of Philadelphia, formerly contained facilities for a small chapel, library, classrooms, offices, and student housing. It now serves exclusively as a dormitory. Vail Memorial Library, erected in 1898, was a gift of Dr. William H. Vail of New Jersey. The capacity was doubled when an extension was added in 1953. A special feature of the University's library collection is the Irvin W. Underhill Collection of African Art objects, one of the finest in the United States
