The Pontalba Buildings flank the Place
d'Armes, the picturesque center of ancient New
Orleans. The illustration shows one of them.
They were built over a century ago by the Baron-
ess de Pontalba. For many years they were the
fashionable ancestors of the modern apartment
houses. Today they are New Orleans' approach
to tenement houses.
