The terraced sides of the world's largest
open pit iron ore mine show the effects of the
war's demand for iron ore. This mine, the
Hull-Rust at Hibbing, Minn., operated by the
Oliver Iron Mining Co., a U. S. Steel Corp.
subsidiary, produced 20,000,000 tons of iron
ore in 1944. A total of 361,000,000 tons has
been mined since it was first opened in 1896.
To uncover the iron ore more than 265,000,000
tons of waste material had to be removed
during that period.
