Some of the Federal troops gained this point in the early
skirmishes that preceded the Battle of Missionary Ridge. The
old breastworks and battery pits are still in an excellent state of
preservation. The timber growth is about the same today as
when the battle was fought. The soldiers hauled the cannon
to the summit, their horses being too weak, owing to a scarcity
of food, to be capable of drawing a load up the steep slope.
The cannon were drawn up and placed in position during the
night and the breastworks were completed before morning. This
place formed the center of the Union line and was withheld from
the charge until the Battle of Lookout Mountain had been fought
so that the Confederates could be attacked at the south end of
Missionary Ridge, and until Sherman had crossed the Tennessee
River and encountered the Confederates near Tunnel Hill on
the north end.
