San Ildefonso (Indian name Po-
Whaw-ge) “place where water
raged,” is about 20 miles from
Santa Fe. The inhabitants, num-
bering about 75, belong to the Tewa
tribe. This Pueblo, once important,
is dwindling in population and
probably soon will become extinct
or will become a Mexican village, as
has happened in Pojuaque, Nambe,
Santa Cruz and numerous other
Pueblos.
