The first Monument erected to the memory
Washington is located on top of South Mountain
built July 4th, 1827. The original monument was gradually
reduced to a state of near ruins over a period of years. In
1936 it was rebuilt and is now a Maryland State Park. It
is reached by a splendid road leading from U. S. 40 just
east of Boonsboro.
