From the first thousand feet elevation on San
Francisco Mountains 300 extinct volcanos can be
seen. Many of them are perfectly formed cones,
deeply covered with black and red cinders, the red
cinders seemingly being a perpetual ray of ruddy
sunset light. Sunset Mountain is a name applied
in recognition of this remarkable aspect.
