Historic picture of 5 hardy workmen ready to
descend Mt. Washington, N. H., on the cog rail-
way, on the unique "slideboard.” Banned in
1930 as too dangerous, the contraption was
made of wood with metal reinforcements and
was about 3 ft. by 1 ft. It had friction brake
handles with metal pieces which slid under the
cog rail flanges. Pulling up on these would slow
the speed. 10 minutes for the 3-mile trip was
customary and the record was 2 mins., 45 secs. A
slideboard is on display at the Marshfield House.
