Additional Details:
Historic picture of 5 hardy workmen ready to decent Mt. Washington, N.., on the cog railway, on the unique "slideboard." Banned in 1930 as too dangerous, the contraption was made of wood with metal reinforcements and was about 3 ft. by 1 ft. It had friction brake handles with metal pieces which slid under the cog rail flanges. Pulling upon these would slow the speed. 10 minutes for the 3-mile trip was customary and the record was 2 mins., 45 secs. A slideboard is on display at the Marshfield House
