CALIFORNIA'S FIRST THEATER
Monterey, California
Built in 1847 by Jack Swan. It was used at various times
as a sailors' boarding house and whalers' headquarters. In
the spring of 1848 the first paid theatrical performance in
California was given here. Now a State Historical Monument.
