MURPHY'S
Early in 1849, John and Daniel Murphy, two
brothers, came from Monterey to do a little gold
digging. They struck it rich and the camp took
their name. It was here that Joaquin Murrieta was
a monte dealer in 1851. His bloody career started
when his brother was unjustly accused of horse
stealing and was hung, Joaquin was 'flogged. Out-
wardly the town looks like it did in the 1800's,
the street is shaded by elms and Chinese heaven
trees. The buildings have iron shutters. A great
number of notable men stopped here, Mark
Twain, Horatio Alger, Thomas Lipton, C.E.
Bolton (Black Bart the bandit), General Ulysses
S. Grant, and many others..M.P.
