Savannah Beach
is the popular playground and summer resort of
Savannah. Swimming, fishing, boating and other outdoor
sports are enjoyed. The island was known to the
Spaniards before English settlement as the Bay of Shoals.
In preparation of the seige of Fort Pulaski, cannon from
the blockading Union ships were landed on the south end
of the island and dragged across the marshes to the
firing position.
