THE TOPEKA AVENUE BRIDGE
SPANS THE KANSAS RIVER
at Topeka and is a connecting link in U. S.
Highway No. 75. The bridge is of deck-plate
steel girder type. The center span is 941 feet
long and is the largest span of continuous
plate girder that has ever been fabricated
in the United States. Five spans make up
bridge, which is 4,440 feet, almost a mile
long, and the longest highway bridge in
Kansas.
The four lane traffic roadway is thirty seven
feet above the high water mark and was
opened to through traffic in September 1938.
