San Bernardino - First described, 1775 by Fray Francisco Garces (famous Franciscan Missionary - Explorer for whom the Harvey Hotel at Needles is named); called by him "Vale of Paradise." San Gabriel Mission established a branch chapel here, and gave the present name (for St. Bernardine of Sierra) before 1821. Town founded 1851 by 300 Mormons crossing the desert from Salt Lake.
