CUSTIS AND WIFE. In a retired part of Arlington
Cemetery two marble shafts mark the graves of George Washing.
ton Parke Custis and his wife Mary L. Custis. When Col.
John Parke Custis (son of Mrs. Washington) died at the siege
of Yorktown during the Revolutionary War, Gen. Washington
adopted as his own the two children, George Washington
Parke Custis and his sister Nelly. G. W. P. Custis lived at
Mount Vernon until after the death of Mrs. Washington, when
he removed to Arlington. He died in 1857.
