REPUBLIC, WASHINGTON
This little community nestled in the mountains of
northeastern Washington was born in 1897
when a rush of prospectors and miners turned
it into a roaring gold camp. The boom that
followed resulted in the construction of dozens
of substantial buildings, many of which survive.
Today mining shares the economy with logging
and ranching. Many vacationers and hunters
enjoy the surrounding lakes and forests.
