Once called the Saskatchewan Trail and later the Portage la Prairie
Road, today's eight-lane traffic and business artery, Portage Avenue,
has supplanted the gumbo trail of the historic Red River Carts. It
seems appropriate that Winnipeg's present tallest structure the Richard-
son Building, shown in left background of this view, should bear the
name of one of Western Canada's foremost pioneer grain families.
