During the Nez Perce war of 1878 To-ka-map-po was in the prime of womanhood. During the battle of Big Hole in Montana when General Gibbon fought Chief Joseph she fought the soldiers hand to hand. She was captured and put on a horse behind a soldier and securely tied. The soldier started for headquarters with her, but she managed to untie her hands. She reached in the soldier belt, drew his knife and stabbed him, then rolled him off the horse and made her way back to her own people
