LA FONDA HOTEL, AT THE END OF
THE SANTA FE TRAIL, SANTA FE,
NEW MEXICO
“La Fonda” (Spanish for “The Inn”)
was the name applied to the ancient adobe
hostelry which stood at this corner, and
where arrivals in early day found welcome
and comfort after the arduous and danger-
ous journey over the Indian and bandit-in-
fested Santa Fe Trail. “The Inn” declined
in the character of its patronage, was finally
given over to other purposes, and much of
it burned, after the coming of the railroad.
In 1920-1, the people of Santa Fe by public
subscription raised almost a quarter of a
million dollars, with which the present mag-
nificent edifice was erected. Its exterior is
a perpetuation in steel and concrete of the
ancient Santa Fe architecture, while the in-
terior decorated along Indian and Spanish
lines is a thoroughly modern and comfort-
able hotel.
