Additional Details:
The Palace of the Governors was built in 1609, in the reign of Philip III of Spain, by Don Pedro de Peralta, Governor and Captain-General of the "Kingdom and Provinces of New Mexico". Besieged and abandoned during the Pueblo Rebellion of 1680, it was retaken by the Spaniards under De Vargas in 1692 and finally captured by Gen. Stephen W. Kearney in 1847. Here Lew Wallace wrote much of his famous book "Ben Hur"
