MOMBASA HARBOR. Mombasa is on the coast of
British East Africa and is the Eastern terminus of the
Uganda railway. Here the Roosevelt party disembark-
ed and took train for Nairobi and the Ju-Ja ranch of
20,000 acres of Mr. W. N. McMillan, the St. Louis
millionaire, whose guests they were for a time. Mom-
basa was held for two centuries by the Portugese who
were the first nation to round the Cape of Good Hope
and to make a settlement in West Africa. They were
expelled from the country by the Arabs about the mid-
dle of the 18th century. It is a fortified town with an
excellent harbor.
