O'NEILL was founded in 1864 by General John O'Neill and a
band of Irish immigrants who moved here from Scranton,
Pennsylvania, and northern Michigan. In 1876 O'Neill be-
came the County Seat of Holt County, and was incorporated
in 1882. The city is generally considered “The Irish Capitol
of Nebraska.”
