CHASE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, built of hand
cut native stone. Stonecutters paid $3.50 per day,
laborers $1.75-$2.25. No record of other work-
men. The building accepted as completed October
8, 1873, at a total cost of $42,599.98. House-
warming held Friday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to
midnight. A ball in courtroom at $1.00 per
couple, supper extra. It is Renaissance Style
architecture of the period of Louis XIII. Has
basement, two stories, with mansard roof and
cupola. Stands 113 feet from ground to top of
flagpole. It is the oldest courthouse still in use
in Kansas.
