Founded in 1857, was named after Longfellow's poem, Song of Hiawatha. The Town Clock, located in downtown Hiawatha, is the only such clock between Indianapolis and Denver on US Highway 36. The Courthouse, built in 1925, was dedicated on November 11, 1926. The V in Courthouse was used as it was easier to carve, and because the Stone Mason's alphabet did not contain the letter "U" at the time of construction
