THE MOTHER LODE COUNTRY OF CALIFORNIA
The old Hetty Green quartz mine, later called the Eureka,
at the foot of Sutter Hill, Sutter Creek. Reputed to have
had a gold output of $25,000,000. The gold rush of 1849
ushered in an era of modern mining. The crude method
of extracting gold from crevices by the use of knife point
rapidly gave way in turn to panning, hydraulic sluicing,
quartz mining and dredging.
