Covering 5 1/2 acres at the end of South 5th Street, the cemetery occupies the former site of old Fort Smith. First known burial was August 24, 1819, when it was the post cemetery for the fort. Became a national cemetery in 1867. Approximately 3,000 veterans of the War of 1812, Indian Wars, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Korean War are buried here
