The foundation of this, the oldest academic
building in America, was laid in 1695, accord-
ing to plans of Sir Christopher Wren, the great
English "Surveyor' or architect. The statue in
the foreground is of the royal governor, Norborne
Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt.
