ST. MARY'S CATHEDRAL
NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI
The cornerstone of this splendid Gothic
Cathedral was laid in 1842, and the first mass
was said within its walls in 1843. Since then,
each generation has contributed to its comple-
tion; there being added successively its vaulted
and frescoed ceilings, its fine stained glass
windows, and its exquisite carrara marble altar.
The first white men in this section were mis-
sionary priests who came in 1699, to bring the
gospel to the natives.
