CHAMBERSBURG, PENNA.
One of the oldest colleges for women in the U.S. was
opened in "Norland," former home of Col. A. K. Mc-
Clure in 1870. Col. McClure, a newspaper publisher was
a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. Norland was partially
destroyed by fire by Confederate Cavalry in 1864 when
the town of Chambersburg was burned for refusing to
pay a ransom to save the town.
