President Reagan met with Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat and committed the United States
to continuing its Middle East peace efforts.
The President assured Sadat that he desired to
continue building upon the achievements of
Camp David. Sadat detailed the growing Soviet
presence in the Persian Gulf region and Africa
while pressing for more U.S. aid and military
equipment. Supporting independence movements
in Africa, Sadat also urged Reagan to start talks
with the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion) but Reagan stayed firm on his Camp
David commitments to Israel. August 5, 1981
