Largest of all the under-ground mines on the Gogebic Range is the Montreal Mine, located near Hurley, Wis. and Ironwood, Mich. The iron ore is raised to the surface from different levels and the deepest shaft is 4,000 feet below surface. The ore is sent by rail to Ashland, Wis. where it is loaded into giant freighters destined for the steel mills of the lower end of the Great Lakes
