King Juan Carlos of Spain and his wife, Queen
Sophia, attract special attention from President
and Nancy Reagan. Juan Carlos is the only
European monarch who still wields political
power. Reagan believes that Juan Carlos can
help pave the way for Spain's entry into the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This would
strengthen Western defenses against Russia and
give us the continued use of military bases on
Spanish soil. The king is willing to talk about
NATO as a means of ending the long isolation of
Franco's regime. October 12, 1981
