River falls victim to flood debris-laden mudflow.
Property owners thinking they were safe from
the volcano's fury found homes and lives
washed away in seconds. Residents had dif-
ficulty comprehending the awesome power in
50 mph torrents of steaming mud the con-
sistency of wet cement as it boiled over river
banks, invading homes from cellar to roof.
