WASHINGTON MONUMENT

Night scene in Mt. Vernon Place, showing the Pea-
body Conservatory of Music just to the right of the
Monument. This was the first Washington Monu-
ment to be begun and the 'first of importance to be
completed in the U.S. Funds for construction were
raised by lottery. The ribbons of light were woven
by headlights of autos moving west on Monument St.
