NO. 25. OLD STONE HOUSE,
(Main near Twentieth) RICHMOND, VA.
This venerable building, with its weatherworn walls of
stone boulders, is reputed to be the oldest in the City, it
having been erected (probably in 1737) by Jacob Ege, a
German emigrant in whose family it remained for several
generations. In the course of time many interesting legends
have gathered around its ancient walls
. Thus the yard in
the rear of the building is said to contain a number of Indian
graves. It is also said to have been occupied by Genl. Geo.
Washington as his headquarters on one occasion. And one
of its upper rooms, it is claimed, was used by Patrick Henry
as a law office.
It is now owned and maintained by the Ass'n. for the
Preservation of Va. Antiquities.
