The central building of this connected group dates from
1789 and is designed after an ancient Roman Temple. The
two wings were added in 1906. Here Aaron Burr was tried
for treason in 1807, and here sat the Congress of the Con-
federate States. In the rotunda stands Houdon's incompar-
able statue of Washington.
