AT THE END OF THE SANTA FE TRAIL
SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO
"La Fonda" (Spanish for "The Inn") was the
name applied to the ancient adobe hostelry which
stood at this corner, and where arrivals in early
days found welcome after the journey over the
Indian and bandit infested Santa Fe Trail.
With the coming of the railroad, "The Inn"
declined in patronage, became used for other pur-
poses, and much of it burned. The beginning of the
present edifice was built by public subscription of
the citizens of Santa Fe. Later it was taken over
and greatly enlarged by the Fred Harvey Company.
Its exterior is a perpetuation in steel and concrete
of the ancient Santa Fe architecture, while the
interior, decorated along Indian and Spanish lines,
is a thoroughly modern and comfortable hotel.
